Girls' Generation (Korean: 소녀시대; Japanese: 少女時代) is an eight member girl group from Seoul, South Korea formed in 2007 by SM Entertainment. The group debuted on SBS Inkigayo on August 5, 2007, performing their first single, "다시 만난 세계 (Into the new world)". Girls' Generation is considered South Korea's No. 1 girl group. The members are (in order of official announcement): 윤아 (Yoona), 티파니 (Tiffany), 유리 (Yuri), 효연 (Hyoyeon), 수영 (Sooyoung), 서현 (Seohyun), 태연 (Taeyeon), and 써니 (Sunny). They are a multilingual group, with members that speak English, Chinese, and Japanese. Both Tiffany and former member 제시카 (Jessica) were raised in America, HyoYeon traveled to Beijing in 2004, and SooYoung started out in the Japanese entertainment industry in the girl group route φ in 2004. Many of the members were already recognizable to the Korean population before debut for their television commercials, magazine ads, and MCing on radio shows. 소녀시대-태티서 (Girls' Generation-Taetiseo), a sub-group put together by the artist's label SM 엔터테인먼트, comprising of Tiffany, Seohyun, and Taeyeon, was formed in 2012. Their debut album Twinkle was released on iTunes and other music service sites on April 29th, 2012. In September 2014, Jessica was forced out of the group for reasons that still remain unclear, as both parties (Jessica and SM Entertainment) have conflicting accounts of the incident.
